DIME Blog for week 03
Write about an idea for an innovation, specifically in computing.
My idea is to create a AR headset that is fundamentally different than any other VR headset on the market currently. The design would be compact, lightweight would not require a powerful PC to run applications or videogames for it (however streaming from another local machine or cloud computer would still be possible and encouraged). The form-factor of this device is to resemble that of a pair of glasses. The headset would be able to overlay images and data over the real world such as information over various objects and places as well as showing real time information such as directions. In addition, the headset could be used to completely block out the real world and immerse the user in a full virtual reality experience.
This product would most likely be an always-connected device that uses artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing and distributed computing to fulfill its purpose. The device would have to be highly optimised and leverage bleeding-edge optics, electronics and software technology.
What sets this product apart is it’s design catering for everyday use: being lightweight, being computationally powerful enough to handle the majority of the tasks it needs while offloading the more computationally demanding tasks to remote servers - be they cloud servers or the user’s personal PCs, being a streamlined experience which allows a low barrier of entry for users while still allowing full flexibility of the platform to power-users.
I anticipate a product like this can be as disruptive and revolutionary to the personal computer industry as the iphone and unlock serious opportunities and new markets for this new use of technology.
